Westfield London, Phase 2 expansion
Acoustic design of £650m retail expansion to become Europe's largest mall
A £650m expansion of Westfield London completed in 2018 which added 70,000m² of retail space, plus offices, mall areas, events venue, car parking. Acoustic design challenges included:
- The control of underground noise from the Central line, specification of resilient bearings to isolate large sections of the new building from the ground, and feasibility assessments for future residential schemes.
- Expansive construction noise assessments to support Section 61 agreements with the Local Authority.
- Room acoustic design of the new mall areas, to support speech intelligibility of the voice announcement systems.
- Business continuity assessments for Vue cinema, to ensure construction noise was not unduly disruptive.
- Complex assessment of noise and vibration from new mechanical services equipment.
- Development of tenant lease clauses to support neighbourly occupants while being clear on requirements.
- Acoustic design of Aerial Way offices to achieve BREEAM Very Good
- Refurbishment of the former DIMCO warehouse as an entertainments venue, now known as Exhibition London.
